If you do this all the time and love the fast paced rapids with some rock challenges in between, the 8 mile should suit you.
I'm not gonna lie, the 7th mile was tough and a bit scary, because we started at 12pm, and it was about 5:15 when we were toward the end of the 7th mile. Having never done it before, we weren't too confident if we were near the end, going the right way, etc. I assumed we were, cause the river only flows one way, but with the sun starting to go down and every turn around the corner not having the end makes one nervous as a first timer. Thankfully, we FINALLY made it to the end and we sure felt it the next day (haha). I will say that once we completed the full trip, we felt such a sense of accomplishment for "going the distance" like Rocky. Now I know what Darla meant over the phone by "we're at the end of the line". The 8 mile trip all in all took us 5 1/2 hours
We kayak this river every year, and chose this company to rent from this trip. Definitely much farther than anything previous, BUT the staff were great and friendly, and it was SO nice to not have to wait for a van to pick us up after a long trip! Highly recommend!
We decided to be brave and do the 8 mile trip. Let me tell you, the 8 mile is no joke. Greg and Darla tried to politely warn us that it can be a challenge. But we did it anyway. My thought process was "oh, we'll have more scenery to enjoy" . I was in for a rude awakening, you don't really have time to enjoy the "extra" first 3 miles.
Excellently ran canoe and kayak outfitter. No hassle and no deposits. The owners make you feel valued The river is beautiful. Clean clear water. "Can't wait to go back" in the spring and summer with snorkeling gear. Wildlife is abundant.many aquatic critters, deer, feral hogs,Blue Herring, and more. 5 and 8 mile trip available.expect to pay in the range of 30 for kayak, and 40 per canoe.very reasonable rate only thing we were less in favor of was having canoe back by 6 p.m. The owners helped make ours a wonderful outing thats worth the short drive from Oklahoma City.
My wife and I wanted to kayak the river and we chose Wild Goose based on their TripAdvisor rating. They are located downriver in the middle of nowhere. To launch they drive you upriver where the other outfitters are located at, and then you float back down river to your car. There are pros and cons to this. In hindsight if we had chosen an outfitter located up river at the launch site, it would’ve saved us almost 20 minutes in the extra commuting back and forth down river since we were coming from Beavers Bend State Park. We booked the 5 mile trip the day before over the phone, and arrived 15 minutes early as instructed. Upon our arrival we weren’t greeted by the staff. We walked in and introduced ourselves and they took down our info, checked us in, handed us life vests (that reeked of B/O), and told us to get in the van. No safety instruction or advice on navigating the river was given at all. When we arrived to the launch area the staff put our kayaks in the water, handed us our paddles, and told us to get in, and they pushed us off. The staff seemed unenthused to say the least. We didn’t hear the typical “have fun”, or “enjoy your trip” type things like you’d expect to hear from an excursion company. We didn’t realize this but there’s little to no current on the 5 mile section so we had to paddle 90% of the way. The staff told us it would take 2 ½ hours if we didn’t stop and relax too much. We weren’t trying to keep up a high pace and we did have to pull over for about 10 minutes to wait out a massive downpour. To our surprise we finished in a little over 1 ½ hours. When we arrived to the exit point staff members took our kayaks, and asked us to place the paddles up by the main building. No staff member asked us how our trip was, or if we had a good time. Since it rained on us quite a bit my wife was cold and I asked a staff member if they had a towel we could borrow for her. The staff informed us they were out of loaners but they did have some available for purchase, which we did.
Overall, we will definitely do this again, but I can say with full confidence, it will be the 5 mile (haha)
My recommendation would be, if you're a beginner and don't do this often, the 5 mile should be right up your alley.
This place is absolutely amazing. Greg and Darla are completely accommodating to all of your kayak and canoe needs. When we called they preferred that we pay in cash but because we were running a bit later than expected (they let us in anyway!!) we forgot to grab cash but they allowed us to pay via debit card (so nice and convenient). This place is a bit out of the way and as such there was no phone signal so be sure you know the way to get there before hand. The river that we kayaked (Mt. Fork river) was so pretty to look at with all of the wild life and the banks full of cypress trees. I highly recommend going to see these guys if you are in the area.
Overall we had a good time but we would try a different outfitter next time. There are many other options to choose from, and in my opinion Wild Goose’s staff members provided poor customer service.
This place was top notch. It was our first time to Kayak. Greg and Darla were just fantastic down to earth people. The set up process is super simple, you park your car at their address, they took us to a drop off point on the river and you basically float back down to their grounds where you parked your car without having to meet anybody or call someone.
Let me tell you, the 1st 3 miles that are included on the 8 mile trip are TOUGH for a 1st timer, you go through a lot of Rock Quarries and there are some fast rapids with a strong current that can be difficult for a beginner. For those not used to it, you or your partner can end up getting stuck between a lot of rocks, which can happen if you're not used to guiding a kayak. That's a tough start to learn for your first outing. You may have to backtrack to help each other out if you take separate Kayaks like we did, which can be frustrating or "relationship building" depending on how you look at it. :-)
Once you get to mile 3, it calms down drastically where you can slow down and enjoy the trip. The last 5 miles was our favorite part, the water was calm and we could enjoy it at our own pace and take photos.
